Wide Earth Smallholding

Wide Earth Smallholding

And Allaah has made for you the earth a wide expanse.(Qur'aan- 71:19)

Garden Update (end of Rajab -begining of June)

This is quick update on our garden efforts – efforts still being done by distance right now.

QadrAllaah we still are not onsite at the house where we have set up our garden beds nor do we have water onsite there yet. We are presently bringing water from an adjacent building by bucket and tending the garden daily. Alhamdulillah there are a number of successes in light of this, and the greatest is continuing on to the best of our ability for Allaah’s pleasure alone in an endeavor that we see as beneficial for us and our family.

Our experimental hugelkuture bed with potatoes is also doing well. One of the concerns I had was adequate drainage because of the strength of the downpours and storms here in Missouri, but alhamdulillah the raised beds are draining quickly, and well while still retaining water in the soil mixture. It is the beginning of the growing season (we had some surprise snow just over a month ago) and our only regular harvest is lettuce which exploded back in the first week after harvesting some of their outer leaves.  But we pray that there is much more to come. And the success is with Allaah.

  1. Asalaamu alaikum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakahtuh. This year will be our first year gardening. May Allaah make it a sucess ameen.

So far my husband and son have built two 8×4 raised garden beds. Mashaallaah. I’ve ordered seeds from theseedguy.com and I will say they have excellent customer service and provided great info for us newbys. I also bought two window boxes for herbs and a box for some strawberries. I probably went a little crazy on the variety of seeds I bought but I just couldn’t help myself I’m so excited.

We will get our soil mixture for the boxes this week insha Allaah from a local nursery. And then we will begin planting our cold tolerant seeds.

I struggled and debated on whether or not to start indoors or plant direct in the ground and went with in ground. And I am patiently waiting our last frost which is supposed to be around the second week of April.

Please keep us up to date I love reading your posts!

Alhamdulillah, what a wonderful start you’ve made!! I have trouble whittling down on seeds as well, even with saving our own. There’s always something else I want to try, mash’Allaah. We have a rather large lawn area in the front that I am hoping to break up into garden spaces, insh’Allaah.
I haven’t used theseedguy.com, I will have to look into that. Customer service makes such a difference, mash’Allaah. I ordered most of our seeds from Pinetree and Horizon Herbs this year, mash’Allaah. Last year most were from Baker Creek. We have always had very good germination rates on our seeds from all of those companies, alhamdulillah.
Last year we had the most success with the direct planted seeds, alhamdulillah. The transplants were a mixed bag. This year I made up my own soil mix to plant in, and so far so good. I am worried that maybe they are growing TOO fast, mash’Allaah! If all else fails, there are two organic nurseries nearby, so I can cheat if I kill off all of my seedlings, mash’Allaah.
Make sure you keep me up to date as well, insh’Allaah, as to what is happening there!
